SUGAR’S DELIGHT
“Sugar‘s Delight” is the title track where the album name comes from, an easygoing “Pachanga” where you can hear the unmistakable sound of Ray Barreto “Hard Hands” on congas, the album starts with “Camina y Ven” a countryside guajira by “Celina and Reutilio” with Carlos Embale on vocals accompanied by Orquesta Kuvabana directed by Carlos Barberia.
“Descarga Guajira” an impressive jam by “Cachao’ starts with a montuno which ends with a masterful trumpet performance by “El negro Vivar” and Yeyo Iglesias y Tata Güines on percussion.
‘Abaniquito “ is a powerful mambo by Tito Puente” performed here by Jack Constanzo y his Afrocubans. Tito shines on “Mambo beat” a fusion of mambo and latin jazz followed by ”Joe Cuba’s Mambo” with a typical “El barrio” sound with the added cunning playing of Joe on Congas.
The very cuban rhumba “Cachita” revisited by Eddie Palmieri , and we nish with “Ay camina y ven’ by “loco” Kako Bastar band leader of the Alegre all stars , consisting of Johnny Pacheco, Cheo Feliciano, Yayo El Indio, Al Santiago and Barry Rogers on trombone who later on would give ‘The Fania All stars’ so much swing.
You’ll probably say “what’s new?”, exactly, not too much..but is a very soulful music that will make you move your hips and is necessary to understand what would come later on, Boogaloo and Salsa.

In this series we bring in some of the names of the Latin Bands based in New York between the 40’s and 60’s and other recordings done in Cuba by Orquestas of the likes of Arsenio Rodríguez, José Curbelo, Roberto Faz, and the immeasurable Sonora Matancera , Orquesta Kubavana or La Playa Sextet that were a big in uence for the Latinos in New York.
We are talking about musicians of the stature of Jack Constanzo(of Italian origins) Ray Barreto, Eddie Palmieri, Willie Bobo, Mongo Santamaría, Sabú Martínez or Joe Cuba, The Alegre All-Stars, the very cubans Pío Leyva, Cachao or Arsenio Rodríguez, the powerful voice of Carlos Embale, the elegant ad libs of Ibrahim Ferrer or Vicentico Valdés and the unmistakable and overwhelming presence of La Lupe.

The obsessive searching (in all the best ways) and crate digging pay off once again for the Analog Africa crew! This compilation is a veritable gold mine of crazy good funky riffs with horns aplenty. As with most AA offerings, the music appears to originate from various sources and time periods but the underlying quality of all the tracks is undeniable.
